If you’re suffering from a painful toothache, it’s important to see your emergency dentist as soon as possible. However, there are still a few things you can do on your own to temporarily relieve discomfort until it’s time for your appointment. Here are five tried and trusted home remedies that may help!
Cold Compresses
Try holding a cold compress on your cheek over the painful tooth in 20-minute intervals. This should help numb some of the discomfort and reduce the swelling and inflammation it may be causing, without increasing sensitivity.
Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide can help ease toothache pain by eliminating dangerous bacteria that may be causing inflammation in the mouth. It also can help get rid of any bad tastes in the mouth that may be caused by infection. To use, gently swish three percent hydrogen peroxide for a few seconds and then spit it out. Follow by rinsing well with plain water.
Clove Oil
Clove oil is a safe remedy that works to numb the tooth thanks to a naturally occurring ingredient called eugenol. To reap its benefits, put a few drops on a cotton swab or ball, and gently dab it directly onto the tooth. You can also hold it in your mouth against the tooth for longer-lasting relief.
Saltwater
Saltwater is often recommended to ease oral pain because it both cleans and soothes the mouth. To make, just boil a cup of water to every one teaspoon of salt, until the salt has completely dissolved. Then, allow it to cool so enough that it won’t burn your mouth, and swish it gently. Once done, spit it out, and rinse your mouth again with plain, warm water. Repeat as often as you’d like.
Ginger and Cayenne Paste
Cayenne pepper contains a natural numbing agent called capsaicin, while ginger is packed with anti-inflammatory properties. When the two are mixed, they create a pain-relieving paste that can be applied directly to your aching tooth. To make, mix cayenne pepper, ginger, and water into a paste. Apply it directly to the tooth with a cotton ball or swab, holding it in place for several seconds, but be sure to avoid getting it on your other teeth.
