How TMJ Pain Can Be Related to Stress

What Does “TMJ” Mean?

“TMJ” is short for the temporomandibular joint – a hinge-like joint that connects your upper and lower jaw. Sometimes, though, “TMJ” is also used to refer to TMJ disorder, which is when excess physical strain or misalignment causes pain in nearby facial muscles. Since these muscles are so close together, a TMJ disorder can create discomfort in the jaw, neck, head, and even the ears.

How is Stress Related to TMJ?

If your TMJ is caused by stress and only flares up when you have a lot on your mind, relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, and deep breathing could help relieve your pain. However, if jaw misalignment or another anatomical issue is the root cause, you’ll likely need professional treatment.
